Breaking news: DC women to wear pants!
This just in from BleedingCool:
“There is an editorial edict for the DC Comics superlaunch that their female superheroes wear more… practical clothing.
“So Wonder Woman gets to keep her trousers. But the likes of Supergirl will be redesigned so they aren’t running around in a little skirt flashing their panties at every available opportunity either. Female superhero characters will have their legs covered.
“They can still wear tightblack PVC, but gone are the days when the uniforms informed you whether or not your favourite superheroine had undergone special shaving.”

This was my guideline when I ran BIRDS OF PREY for DC, that women would be appropriately covered. A big part of it was respect. Another was practical: wouldn’t women have different versions of their costumes, suitable for different climates? (LIkewise, Oracle had different wheelchairs; I did my homework.) I’m pleased to see DC Editorial apply this aesthetic more broadly (you’ll pardon the awful pun) across the line. There is another editorial guideline I had for myself that I’m also surprised isn’t more widely followed, and it was character-based: Black Canary changed clothes for fashion. Wouldn’t women superheroes do the same? I admit that I was inspired by the Wasp (from Avengers), albeit with less overtly vapid motivations.
