Canada’s largest daily newspaper, the Toronto Star, just ran this terrific preview of Graphic Details. With the Koffler Centre of the Arts our presenter, and the Gladstone as our venue, it’s going to be incredible. A page from Diane Noomin’s chilling and hilarious “Baby Talk” accompanied the piece. Aline Kominsky-Crumb, whose brilliant “Wise Guys” cartoon appears in the Graphic Details exhibit, gets adoration she deserves in a New York Times Magazine Q & A with daughter Sophie today. Brief excerpt:
NYT: Your mom, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, is also a cartoonist who was part of the underground-comics scene in the ’70s.
Sophie Crumb: She was a pioneer of the early all-women’s comics — “Wimmen’s Comix” and “Twisted Sisters.” My mom didn’t get enough attention or glory, I think. My dad gets too much, and she didn’t get enough.
Congratulations to Graphic Details artist Sarah Glidden, whose How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less was published this week by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. You can buy it here – and see Sarah’s original work from the book at the Cartoon Art Museum in SF through January 30, and the Gladstone Hotel galleries in Toronto starting February 17.
Make sure you pick up a Graphic Details catalog if you see the show in SF or our other venues. The Forward, North America’s leading Jewish news source – and a sponsor of Graphic Details – has published a spectacular catalog in the form of an eight-page broadsheet newspaper. You’ll find fascinating essays, artist bios, and more.
If you can’t wait until Graphic Details comes to a city near you, e-mail us and we’ll send you a copy. Thanks to the Forward’s Dan Friedman, David Drimer, and Elaine Tin-Nyo for bringing Graphic Details to life in print.
The Forward ran the original story that inspired Graphic Details. You can read it here.
